Three dream tours
for the whole family
When the autumn sun bathes the Gailtal Alps and the Carnic Alps in golden light, Walter’s mountaineering calves get really itchy. Then he laces up his mountain boots, grabs his hiking hat and – faster than one can say backpack, he is outside in the nature amidst our beautiful Region.

Just come along! Walter has put together many dream tours for you, where you can discover all sorts of things: mountain lakes, waterfalls, gorges, abandoned military tunnels and much, much more.
But hiking is not only Walter’s pleasure, it is also totally healthy. The mountain air and the tranquillity clear the head, the regular movement keeps the body fit and the beautiful view caresses the soul. What more do you want?
Oh yes: A good five-finger snack for on the go, cow bells ringing, bleating goats and a few flowers at the side of the road wouldn’t be bad. Here you are – you can have it all!
Just accompany Walter on one of his dream tours for the whole family.
We have described three of them here for you in detail:
The Zollnersee lake tour starts at the Waidegger Alm, which is known for its delicious Gailtaler mountain pasture cheese. From here we hike along the Carnic high route, where Austria and Italy meet; with that, we are indeed cross-border commuters.
The trail leads us directly to the Zollnersee lake (1,766 m) and as soon as we see it in front of us, we understand why it is called the Alpine Jewel. Nestled in a gentle green hilly landscape, it offers a unique sight. Here we have a rest and enjoy a little meal to gain strength, and the very brave ones can stick their toes into the ice-cold water. Refreshed, we then make our way back past the Zollneralm and the Ahorner Alm, where we meet some cattle and slowly approach the starting point of our hike. Back at the Waidegger Alm you can taste a nice piece of alpine cheese. That’s something not to be missed!
Duration: approx. 3.5 hours walking time
Ascent or descent: approx. 200 metres in altitude
Special features: gentle hilly landscape, border path between Austria and Italy, picturesque Zollnersee lake, production of the Gailtaler mountain pasture cheese
The starting point of this leisurely tour is the city of Hermagor. This time we walk along the Gössering river, which is a tributary of the Gail river and in earlier times operated the watermills, sawmills and forgings of the city.
Today, the river is mainly used for recreation and invites you to hike, water tread, watch out for trout and let little sticks swim. Right at the beginning a waterfall greets us and we walk leisurely into the gorge on a track.
After about half an hour we turn off to the pasture area Madatsche, follow the path to the Radnig waterfall and then hike back over a small path to the starting point.
Duration: approx. 2 hours walking time
Ascent or descent: approx. 150 metres in altitude
Special features: cool gorge with small bridges, two waterfalls, a nice tour – even if the mountain peaks are covered with clouds from time to time
Our tour to the Freikofel starts at the Plöckenhaus, which is about a 40-minute drive from the Kinderhotel Ramsi and is located in the middle of the Carnic Alps.
We are here in the border area between Austria and Italy, where a fiercely contested front line ran during the First World War. On our hike, we therefore see dilapidated emplacement buildings and abandoned military tunnels – silent eyewitnesses, which we can see up close.
Arriving at the summit of the Freikofel mountain, we enjoy a fantastic view: on clear days we can see all the way to the sea near Trieste. But that’s not all that awaits us up here. The summit is perforated by tunnels like an Emmentaler cheese and we take the opportunity to explore one or the other tunnel using a headlamp or a flashlight.
Afterwards we make our way back via the Rossboden and through the Angerbach valley, where we pass numerous military cemeteries.
Duration: approx. 3.5 hours walking time
Ascent or descent: approx. 500 metres in altitude
Special features: Open-air museum with numerous emplacements and tunnels from the First World War (don’t forget the lamp for the tunnels); on clear days a long-distance view from the Freikofel mountain to Trieste and the Adriatic Sea
At home in the nature adventure world!
